Principal resolution of the Board for Protection of Personal Data (Protection of personal data on websites/applications providing guidance services).

A brief abstract concerning the principal resolution of the Board for Protection of Personal Data titled as “Protection of personal data on websites/applications providing guidance services” dated 21.12.2017 is provided below:

The Board has published the concerning principal resolution following the denouncements and complaints received regarding the web sites and applications providing guidance services without taking their consent which is contrary to the provisions within the Personal Data Protection Law.

The Board indicates in its resolution that so many web sites and applications exist providing contact information of people having social media accounts through name search and let them learn how they’re registered to others’ phones by gathering personal information through web sites, social media accounts and applications and sharing them.

Within this context, it decided to immediately terminate the activities of web sites and mobile applications sharing personal contact information in that way. Also, it has been implied that in cases of violation, not only administrative fines but also imprisonment from 1 year up to 4 years will be applicable since the perpetration of “capture and share data as contrary to the laws” existing in the Criminal Code had been committed.
